Hoge der A (and Lage der A) are the names of the streets in Groningen along both sides of the A between Brugstraat and Visserstraat. Hoge indicates the high quay along the A on the east side. The low quay is located on the west bank. It is said that the high quay was used for unloading ships at high tide and the low at low tide. Until 1877, the influence of the sea was noticeable in the city. This was no longer the case after the damming of the Reitdiep.

The Drentsche Aa, referred to simply as A in the city, originally formed the western boundary of the city of Groningen. Presumably the A ran a bit more to the east, near the Munnekeholm. A second residential center in Groningen was created along the A, next to the probably oldest center around the Martinikerkhof and the Grote Markt. This second core was mainly aimed at trade. The Hoge der A was the first port in the city, located within the city walls at the time.
