The Neue Flora was built because the originally planned department store in the Schanzenviertel was occupied by militant autonomists (Rote Flora). But there was also resistance at the new location. It was built anyway. The first musical to be performed there was "The Phantom of the Opera". At the premiere there were violent protests despite a large police presence. With almost 2,000 seats, the Neue Flora in Hamburg is one of the largest theaters in Germany and was built in 1989/90. The seats are arranged like in a classic amphitheater and offer an unrestricted view of the stage from all seats. This covers an area of 1,500 m², divided into the side, back and main stages. The height from the lower stage to the roof is 33 meters.
