Until 1945:
By far the most important naval base on the North Sea coast was the Wilhelmshaven garrison. Numerous floating units were stationed there. Various ammunition factories were built in the surrounding area. In addition to the naval artillery arsenals and the barrage weapons arsenals, the production of torpedoes was also required. Finally, Wilhelmshaven was also a fast-deployment boat and submarine base.
The Hohehahn naval torpedo depot presented here was built in a wooded area north of what was then Reichsstrasse 210. It was located a good 3 km west of the town of Wittmund. It was completed before the outbreak of World War II. The administrative area was built at the center of the facility. Several buildings for administration and operations were constructed here. To the north and south of this area, strips of land with storage bunkers were created, each running from west to east. Approximately 65 earth-covered bunkers were built.

The Navy stored ordnance here. Details of the facility's infrastructure are not documented. However, it is assumed that a narrow-gauge railway operated on the site for internal handling. This transport method was very common in the Navy. The depot's purpose was to assemble and store torpedoes. Whether explosives were also filled here is unclear.
Until the end of World War II, there were no targeted air raids on the depot.
From 1945:
After the end of the war, the Allies demilitarized the torpedo depot. The storage bunkers were blown up and demolished. However, the administrative area in the center remained largely intact.
The buildings later housed disaster control departments. An office of the German Red Cross and a German Red Cross (DRK) support train were housed here.

In 1994, the Wittmund district established a district nature conservation center in detached houses. The center is affiliated with the district adult education center. The purpose of this facility is to educate interested groups and visitors about nature and environmental protection.
Condition:
Several historic buildings have been preserved in the administrative and operational areas. Only a bunker ruin can be found in the storage area. However, the location of other bunkers can be traced through several earthworks.
Access:
