The Pagoda Warehouse is a former granary in Neustadt in Holstein in the Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein.

The building got its name because its shape is reminiscent of a Far Eastern pagoda. The warehouse, along with the Kremper Gate, is a landmark of the city of Neustadt in Holstein. The storage facility was built on the Neustadt inland waterway and is located next to the bridge that spans the connection to the port and the Baltic Sea.

The pagoda store is a rectangular, single-story half-timbered building made of red brick on an area of approximately 20 by 14 meters. It was built on a foundation of carved boulders. The attic has a hipped roof covered with red roof tiles, which is structured by three rows of surrounding roof hatches and two further landings. The roof is more than twice as high as the ground floor. The roof hatches open onto the attics behind, which served as drying floors for grain. If necessary, they could be opened.

The warehouse was built in 1830 by the carpenter Carl Friedrich Trahn (1806–1888) on behalf of the Neustadt merchant Adam Jansen. Jansen wanted a storage facility with the best possible options for drying grain before it was shipped. The building's design, drawn up by Carl Friedrich Trahn, convinced Adam Jansen. He commissioned Trahn to build it, which met with considerable disapproval from the local master carpenters because Trahn was not yet a master carpenter.

The pagoda store was placed under monument protection in 1972 as a cultural monument of particular importance. In 1991 the pagoda store was extensively renovated. Since then it has been used as an office and commercial building.

The Neustadt inland water - a nature reserve with contact to the Baltic Sea

The FFH and bird protection area "NSG Neustädter Binnenwasser" is located between the city of Neustadt (Holstein) in the south and Altenkrempe in the north. It has existed since 1984 and has been looked after by BUND ever since. With an area of 277 hectares, it includes the northwestern part of the inland water, sporadically flooded grassland, reedbeds and forest areas. The inland water, a lagoon on the Baltic Sea, has a direct connection to the salt water via the Neustädter Hafen. The inland water itself has an area of 145 ha with an average depth of 0.9 m and a maximum depth of 1.6 m.

The inland water gets fresh water from the streams Kremper Au, Lachsau (Lachsbach), Malzmühlenbach (Lübscher Mühlenbach) and Rogerfelder Bach. The salinity in inland water can therefore fluctuate greatly, depending on how much Baltic Sea water flows in and mixes with the fresh water to form brackish water. Especially in the winter months, flooding in the Baltic Sea leads to flooding of low-lying lowland areas and shore areas. This means that the largest salt marshes on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein are located on the Neustadt inland water.

Thanks to the large number of different habitats on the Neustadt inland water, the nature reserve is home to a variety of special plant species, most of which no longer occur in the normal landscape.

The nature reserve represents an attractive habitat for various bird species. However, its importance as a breeding area for seabirds and coastal birds has declined in recent years. When hundreds of water birds visit the inland waters to rest in the autumn, winter and spring months, its importance for bird migration becomes clear. Other bird species use the area for food and breed further away.

Due to its location, the area is important for migratory fish species that pass through inland water on their way to rivers. The nature reserve is crossed by the railway in a north-south direction. It is bordered by the motorway to the west and north.

Actually a nice place. To emphasize is the brewhouse with its various beers and the good menu. The harbor is worth seeing and radiates a maritime flair. In the city center, there is a large market square. There you will find a very good bakery, which also offers breakfast. I come back to Neustadt on occasion!

The Neustadt inland water is wonderfully calm even in the summer months. The city of Neustadt was originally supposed to be built at the end of inland water. A basilica was built there. When this was finished, it turned out that the inland water was silting up and the place was no longer an option. This is how Altenkrempe was created and the 'new city' was built directly on the Baltic Sea ...

Watch boats, eat fish sandwiches and stroll - the Neustadt harbor is the ideal location to get to know maritime life. Away from the harbor, Neustadt has a lot to offer those interested in art and culture. Installations and sculptures by artists from Schleswig-Holstein can be admired along the Jungfernsteig on the south beach. Past the historic pagoda warehouse and over to the only remaining city gate in Ostholstein. Inside is the zeiTTor, a modern adventure museum where you can find out more about Neustadt's eventful past.

Cute little harbor that invites you to linger. Unfortunately sometimes overcrowded on holiday weekends, better come during the weekday in the morning or in the late afternoon.

The path along the inland water is equipped with sculptures by well-known artists sh-kunst.de/ort/neustadt. The pagoda store is outstanding. The port of Neustadt connects the Neustadt inland water. One highlight after the other, great.
