    The ruin is also called the stick tooth of the Waldviertel. At the end of the 12th century Hadmar von Kuenring had the castle built on a huge granite rock. From 1277 to 1593 the ruin was the seat of the district court. The 25 meter high, pentagonal keep partially collapsed more than 500 years ago. From then on the castle was left to decay.

      The place was first mentioned in 1246 and was originally owned by the Kuenringer line of Weitra-Rappottenstein. In 1282 the property passed to the Lords of Falkenberg, and in 1291 to Ulrich of Kapelln. In the 14th century, Arbesbach was mentioned as free property. 1326–1348 it was owned by the Lords of Klingenberg, who in 1347 transferred “di vest und daz haus ze Arybatzbach” to Weikart and Katharina of Winkl. From 1348, Arbesbach was owned by the Lords of Dachsberg and from 1423 by the Lords of Starhemberg. In 1480 the castle was destroyed by a Bohemian raiding party and was not rebuilt. In 1600 the estate passed to the Lords of Tschernembl, and in 1604 to Georg Fenzl of Grueb, and as early as 1605 to Georg Kaspar von Neuhaus. From 1614, it was owned by Mr. von Hackelberg, and from 1675 to 1862 by the Countess Dietrichstein. This was followed by the Herberstein, Geusau, Frhn. Holtz, and from 1877 by the Altzinger family, who still own the estate today and inhabit part of the castle complex.
