Dynasty that can be traced back to the 10th century and is therefore the oldest documented German aristocratic family after the Guelphs. The name is derived from the ancestral castle Wettin (City of Wettin, Saalekreis, Saxony-Anhalt). In the late Middle Ages they succeeded in continuously expanding their sovereign power, which enabled them to have hegemonic rule over all of Central Germany. With the acquisition of the Saxon electoral dignity in 1423, the Wettins rose to the circle of the highest imperial princes. Since the last third of the 15th century, the Wettins were able to establish themselves as one of the most powerful German princely families after the Habsburgs. The division of Leipzig in 1485 led to the continued division of the country and the formation of two Wettin lines. Due to their Franconian possessions, the occupation of Franconian bishops' seats, various marriage connections with Wittelsbachers and Hohenzollers as well as their rivals and allies, the Wettins gained greater importance for the Franconian-Bavarian history of the late Middle Ages.

The former Lucka painter and sculptor Prof. Reinhold Carl designed the fountain.

The fountain itself consists of a fountain basin, which is located on wide granite steps. Sideways benches are attached, which are provided with two pillars, which were decorated with helmets.
In the middle of the fountain is a 1.80 meter tall lion, which used to be the heraldic animal the Wettiner.
In the edge of the fountain is the saying "Today I'm on Meissen, Thuringia and Pleißen - You'll be happy, like the Swabians at Lucke", which also recalls the battle of 1307.
The building consists mostly of Würzburger Muschelkalk.

The fountain is in the present time next to the church the most famous building from Lucka and has already survived two world wars.
