In 1483, a group of Beguines left the Beguinage of Cantimpret to lead a common life, after having made their vows.
They decide to wear a black robe and a black scapular, and are therefore given the name of 'Black Sisters', a name by which they are still known today.
At the end of the 15th century their monastery was built here, with modest dimensions: the courtyard is used as a cemetery and is surrounded by four cloisters.
Several classrooms are scattered around this center, along with two chapels.
This building plan is adopted by most Congregations of Black Sisters and corresponds closely to the Beggar tradition, as it is in perfect harmony with their principles of austerity and poverty.
The monastery was completely renovated by the FUCAM, the Catholic University Faculties of Mons.

Originally established in the beguinage of Cantimpret, this hospitable and teaching congregation was established in 1498 rue des Juifs, which partly became rue des Sœurs Noires. Many times destroyed, only two chapels remain of the original ensemble, both consecrated in the 17th century.
The chapel of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, built in brick and stone in 1586, consists of a single nave ending in a three-sided apse. The three bays on the street side have been walled up and the same facade restored in the 18th century. It is supported, like the choir, by brick buttresses. Adjoining this, the convent chapel, consecrated in 1516, has a similar layout, brightened up with Gothic tracery windows. The saddlebags dominate that of the Sainte Marie-Madeleine chapel with its bulbous bell tower dated 1715.
The conventual buildings, later and distributed around a cloister, consist among other things of a classical wing built in 1749 as an extension of the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine chapel. Built in brick and stone on two clearly separated levels, this facade shows a marked vertical impetus. A late Louis XIV style arched portal with a console key occupies the first bay of this wing. It is framed by pilasters with composite capitals supporting an entablature topped with an arched window bordered by fins and fire pots and surmounted by a triangular pediment. A cutaway forms the link with the long Tournaisian-style wing located on rue du Grand-Trou-Oudart.
Classified as a monument on November 13, 1987
