    The actual Havelquelle is the Bornsee. Originally, the Havel spring water flowed superficially from the south bank of the Mühlensee into the Dieckenbruch. In order to operate a watermill about 500 meters east of the Mühlensee, a barrier dam was piled up in the 14th or 15th century on the south bank of the Mühlensee and a breach in the direction of Ankershagen was created on the east bank. Since that time, the Bornsee (over the Trinnensee and Mühlensee) no longer drains towards the original Havel, but over the Tollense and Peene into the Baltic Sea. The then built dam has slightly shifted the natural North Sea Baltic Sea watershed.

    2007, a small bubbling artificial Havelquelle was created on the south bank of the Mühlensee in the upper part of the Dieckenbruch. A few liters per minute feed now symbolically "real" Havelquellwasser from the Bornsee on the Trinnen and Mühlensee in the Havel.
