    Stein am Rhein (in the local dialect Staa, formerly Latinized Lithopolis or Gaunodurum) is a municipality in the so-called upper part of the canton of the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen. Stein am Rhein is mainly known for its well-preserved old town and is therefore very popular with tourists.
    Archaeological finds and a fragmentary building inscription show that in late antiquity there was a Roman border fortress (about 90 × 90 meters) called 'Tasgetium' in today's urban area, which controlled a bridge over the Rhine and was occupied with limitanei. A settlement of the same name had existed since the 1st century, but the fortress was only built around 300 AD under Emperor Diocletian and was located to the left of the Rhine. Remains of the southern outer wall now form the boundary of a cemetery and are clearly visible. Further work on the fort was still being carried out at the beginning of the 5th century. There was a small bridgehead to the right of the river, and a late Roman cemetery was discovered during excavations around 1900. (Q: Wikipedia)
