    The Château de Fresnay-sur-Sarthe ensured the defense of the city in the Middle Ages. Although its construction dates back to the 10th century, it was modified and enlarged several times during the Middle Ages. From the 18th century, it fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance. After being purchased by the municipality, the castle now houses the public garden. The two-towered châtelet recalls the physiognomy of the place in the 18th century.

      The existence of the castle of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe is attested in the 9th century. Some clues even suggest that inhabitants had already settled on the site during the first millennium. The fortress is built on the rock which overhangs a ford of the Sarthe.
      A well-defended crossing point, coupled with a strategic position on the borders of Maine, Fresnay belonged to the Viscounts of Beaumont who had to defend it on several occasions from attacks by the Norman Dukes during the 11th century.
