The Westgaster mill in the north is something special because it was not built from wood, but from a refractory material in 1863, as two wooden mills in the immediate vicinity of the Westgaster mill had already burned down.

The special thing about the Westgaster mill is that it is directly connected to a covered hallway and the house. The reason for this strange construction has not yet been clarified.

Grain was ground and barley was produced in the mill until the 1970s. Up to a dozen workers could be employed in the mill, so that if the wind was favorable, a whole ton of grain could be processed in an hour. It was not until 1958 that new buildings were allowed to be erected near the mill, as it was feared that the mill buildings could take the wind while it was still in commercial use.

In 1988, Gerd Campen, the former mayor of the city of Norden, became the owner of the mill and worked hard to maintain it. The renovation that was necessary due to wear and tear was completed in 1992 so that the mill was again open to the public. The establishment of the Westgaster Mühle association, which now has a total of 200 members, and the opening of an organic farm shop and a tea room, are intended to secure the mill financially. In addition, the association organizes a mill festival every year.

Those interested can visit the mill up to the fifth floor every day without a guide. Guided tours take place every Thursday at 3 p.m.
