Oświęcim (German Auschwitz, Yiddish ‏אָשפּיצין‎ Oszpitzin, Romani Auszwica) – a city in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, the seat of the Oświęcim district authorities and two communes – the city (the city of Oświęcim) and the rural commune of Oświęcim (the surrounding villages without the city itself).
It was a royal city of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. Royal city of the Oświęcim starosty, in the Silesian district, Kraków Voivodeship, at the end of the 16th century.
Oświęcim is located in historical Lesser Poland, in the 12th century it was the main stronghold of the Oświęcim castellany, which was part of the Kraków land. In the second half of the 12th century or the first half of the 13th century, Oświęcim was incorporated into Upper Silesia, within which it belonged successively to the duchies of Racibórz, Opole-Racibórz, Cieszyn and Oświęcim. In 1564, the Duchy of Oświęcim was incorporated into Poland and transformed into the Silesian district of the Kraków voivodeship, as a result of which the city once again became part of Lesser Poland. The city's historical affiliation to Silesia is evidenced to this day by the city's coat of arms, which features two halves of the Upper Silesian yellow (golden) Piast eagle without a crown on a blue background.
