The Borghese Stone, a geological jewel of the Apennines, is a huge rock mass with a strange shape, located near the refuge of Monte Aiona. The sharp shape of the rock and the material it is made of make it naturally suitable for attracting lightning. Through geological studies it has been determined that the rock is composed of Iherzolite, which emerged from the earth's mantle. This material is highly magnetic and it is for this reason that compasses go crazy in the vicinity of the rock. It is also said that if struck by a hammer the Borghese stone resounds like a bell.
In addition to being a quaint place for mystery lovers, this site is also very attractive to geologists. The properties of the stone therefore seem to be explained thanks to the geological studies carried out on it. When near the "WMeteorite" the compass needle is deviated by more than 100 degrees from the original north, a circumstance caused by the high content of magnetite.
These are intrusive eruptive rocks called Lherzolithic peridotites coming from the sub-continental mantle, which progressively ascended in the Jurassic period, emerging on the bottom of an ancient ocean (the Ligurian Piedmontese Ocean) now disappeared, through systems of faults formed during the relaxing processes that caused its opening before the formation of the Apennines. The name derives from the Lherz Massif, an alpine peridotite complex in the French Pyrenees.
