Since around the 14th century "Des Rades Liberie" was housed in the town hall and only accessible to the council members. When the neighboring Franciscan monastery of St. Marien was dissolved in 1555, the library was moved to the refectory of the monastery for reasons of space and merged with the existing Franciscan collection of writings.
Over several centuries the collection grew through acceptance from other libraries and donations from wealthy citizens. Only a select group of people (councilors, patricians, doctors, pharmacists and scholars) could quench their thirst for knowledge here.
