Very beautiful town with small streets and historic buildings in the heart of Zeeland.
Middelburg owes its name to the fact that it was once the middle castle of Walcheren. In the 9th century, when the Vikings invaded, three ring wall castles were built on Walcheren. Middelburg was the middle one and therefore got this name. When the danger was over, the town developed into a trading center and was granted city rights in 1217.

During the VOC era, Middelburg was one of the most important cities in the Netherlands. Over a period of 200 years, over 300 new ships were built in the shipyards. These ships sailed to Asia to trade in spices, textiles and porcelain. In the city center of Middelburg you can still see buildings that remind you of this golden age.

Middelburg once had the most historic buildings after Amsterdam. Today there are still over 1100 national monuments in the city center. During World War II, Middelburg was hit hard. The fire in Middelburg (shelling and bombing) in 1940 reduced a large part of the historic city center to rubble and ashes. The city was then rebuilt in the traditional style.
