A watchtower from the former city fortifications stands at the Viehmarkt, a square that was still between the city wall and the ramparts in the late Middle Ages. It was built in 1423.

In Stadthagen, however, the entire course of the city wall can still be seen. This was created after the invention of firearms to protect the city from being fired upon. The former wall is now a green area with a footpath that can be used to walk around the entire city center.
