In the past, wealthy families preferred to be buried in the forest. This was not only due to the limited space in the public "death field." Among the oldest graves are those of the apothecaries. The so-called apothecary graves mark the first of the private forest burial sites, so typical of Halle and probably only found in such abundance here. The gravestones greet us somewhat eerily from the forest. Not far from the Hagedorn site, north of the Schützenberg, lie the so-called apothecary graves.

They were created from 1816 onwards, roughly at the same time as the cemeteries on the Lotteberg, and were laid out by Engelhard Dietrich Schmülling. Nine gravestones have survived, eight of them in good condition and legible. The surgeon Dr. Schmülling died in January 1816, his daughter Franziska Wilhelmine two months later, at the age of only 22.

Schmülling's wife survived her husband by 33 years, passing away in 1849, and his unmarried daughter, Auguste Sophie Luise, in 1858. The doctor and the pharmacists were related. Another daughter of Dr. Schmülling married the pharmacist Kress, her daughter Auguste Wilhelmine Lucie married the pharmacist Dr. Schaeffer, and her second wife, the pharmacist Reübert. All rest together in death under slender, tall beech trees.
