The old Mannheim observatory played an important role in the survey of Europe and was used as a secondary station as an astronomical station for triangulation in the Rhenish triangular network (surveyed from 1867 to 1877).

A beautiful old and well-kept building built between 1772 and 1774. The Mannheim observatory was located in the observatory tower built between 1772 and 1774 and remained in operation until 1880. The observatory was then moved to Karlsruhe and in 1898 finally to the Königstuhl near Heidelberg, where the successor institute still exists today as the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory.
