    The legend tells about a famous, brave knight, whose conceit and pride were punished. This knight lived centuries ago and was famous for his extraordinary courage and bravery in many wars. After he gave up his military craft, he decided to make pilgrimages to all the wonderful places in the world. He intended to end his pilgrimage in the monastery in Świętokrzyskie. When he came to Nowa Słupia, he boasted to its inhabitants that he was the most pious man on earth, and at the hour of his death his soul would go straight to paradise. He decided to travel on his knees from the town square to the monastery. He was slowly climbing the stone path to the slope of Łysa Góra. The inhabitants of Nowa Słupia were walking nearby and admired the remarkable persistence of the wanderer.

    Together they reached the edge of the forest, and then they heard bells ringing in a monastery two kilometers away. They stopped surprised, since it was not the time for the service. Pilgrim proudly said that the bells themselves tolled to greet him, paying homage to him. As soon as he said these words, he turned into a stone statue, to the horror of the onlookers.

    From now on, the stone statue of the pilgrim repents for the sin of self-righteousness. Every year it moves about a grain of sand towards the monastery. When he gets there, his penance will end, but so will the world.
