The municipal Johannisfriedhof cemetery is located on the eastern slope of the Kahler Berg, which is part of the Teutoburg Forest. The cemetery was established in 1874 as an addition to the old cemetery near Jahnplatz, which was becoming increasingly small due to the growing population. As a classic park cemetery, the Johannisfriedhof is dominated by wide green strips, a wide lawn axis and numerous rhododendron and thuja species.

In 2016 Johannisfriedhof was voted Germany's most beautiful cemetery.

The nearly 150-year-old Bielefeld Johannisfriedhof has been voted the most beautiful cemetery in Germany by a jury of the internet portal bestattungen.de. Thus, the so-called Bestattungen.de Award went to Bielefeld for the second time after 2015, as the Internet portal announced on Thursday in Hamburg. In the previous year the cemetery was in front.

The listed Bielefeld Johannisfriedhof was built in 1874 on the eastern slope of the Teutoburg Forest in the immediate vicinity of the Herrmann Hiking Trail. Many well-known Bielefeld citizens have found their final resting place there, including Alfred Bozi and the founder of the Oetker factory, August Oetker (1862-1918).

A 1.7-hectare tree park in the middle of the grounds with over 70 different cypress and tree species make the park cemetery near the city center a special place of rest, explained the jury. The so-called arboretum represents a special relic of the earlier burial culture. The over 100 years old trees were once planted for lack of money as a substitute for a grave stone.

The Bestattungen.de Award has been in existence since 2011. To the jury
The former Bavarian state bishop Johannes Friedrich, the clergyman vice of the Evangelical Lutheran State Church Office in Hanover, Arend de Vries and the Berlin medical doctor Winfried Hardinghaus are among them. In total there were 24 cemeteries and
Funeral forests have been proposed for the price.

In 2016, Johannisfriedhof was voted the most beautiful cemetery in Germany (it was me in 2015, too). A bike path also passes the cemetery.

Created as a classic park cemetery, the Johannisfriedhof still has lush plant strips between the tombs, an extensive lawn axis and a curved trail. In addition, the rich old trees testify to the then generous facilities. Especially in the so-called "Arboretum" the visitor will find a variety of old rhododendrons, Thuja and Chamaecyparis species. To preserve these plants, the Arboretum 1986 was decommissioned.

Often the Johannisfriedhof is used as a welcome place for a walk because of its adjacent location to the botanical garden and the animal park Olderdissen and the proximity of the city forest. The citizens and visitors of the city will find here a quiet place away from the noise and bustle of the city of Bielefeld.

Just like the adjoining cemetery of the Jewish religious community, the Johannisfriedhof was listed as a historical monument in 1986.

The complex is characterized by a variety of historically and artistically valuable tombs, one finds extensive family tombs with magnificent monuments and elaborate borders. Many well-known Bielefeld citizens, manufacturers and politicians have found their final resting place here.
