Veroli is one of the richest towns in Ciociaria in history, culture and art. Hernica city with the name of Verulae, later a Roman municipality, had great importance in the Middle Ages as a bishopric. The well-preserved Borgo S. Croce, which is accessed from the door of the same name with the nearby fourteenth-century palace, belongs to the medieval period. Its churches also have medieval origins. Sant’Erasmo is a Romanesque church built on a previous Benedictine monastery, of which it maintains the facade and bell tower; inside, the canvas by Sebastiano Conca (1747) recalls the meeting that took place here between Barbarossa and Pope Alexander III to agree on the Peace of Constance.
