    Even the remaining sections of this once largest church in the world are still impressive: Cluny Abbey (or Cluni, or Clugny, French pronunciation: ​[klyni]) dedicated to St Peter, is a former Benedictine monastery in Cluny, Saône-et-Loire, France. It was built in the Romanesque style, with three churches built in succession from the 4th to the early 12th centuries. The earliest basilica was the world's largest church until the St. Peter's Basilica construction began in Rome.
    By the time of the French Revolution, the monks were so thoroughly identified with the Ancien Régime that the order was suppressed in France in 1790 and the monastery at Cluny almost totally demolished in 1810. Later, it was sold and used as a quarry until 1823. Today, little more than one of the original eight towers remains of the whole monastery.

      The Romanesque Benedictine abbey church was the largest church in the West until the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is believed that the abbey church could hold up to 10,000 pilgrims, at a length of just under two football fields. The monastery was continuously extended from 910 to the 12th century. During this time, Cluny became a major spiritual power among important abbots. In 1790 the monastery was closed and gradually sold for demolition. At the beginning of the 19th century, the once most magnificent church in the world ended up as a quarry and ruined field.

      From the former "miracle of the occident" remained only few remains. The more than 100,000 visitors a year (therefore visit as early in the morning and not on weekends!)
