Sonneberg and the surrounding region developed into one of the main areas of toy manufacturing in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. At the beginning of the 20th century, Sonneberg publishers dominated world trade and made Sonneberg a world toy city. The German Toy Museum, founded in 1901, is the visible document for one of the largest toy metropolises that has ever existed.

The German Toy Museum is one of the most important cultural and historical collections in Germany. The special features of the collection include Sonneberg wooden toys from the 18th and 19th centuries, figures made from bread dough and paper mache, dolls from Sonneberg and Thuringia, toys from ancient Egypt and classical antiquity, and toys from East Asia and Africa. In the show pieces "Gulliver in Liliput" (1843/44) and "Thüringer Kirmes" (1910) the museum preserves rare evidence of advertising by the toy industry for the world exhibitions of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The library of the museum has a considerable collection of toy sample books from the 19th century.

After completion of the overall project, visitors to the German Toy Museum can expect an exhibition complex that extends over three buildings. The plans include a generous special exhibition area. The museum's educational work as well as play and activity zones were also given more space than before. A viewing depot will house a large part of the museum objects. The future permanent exhibition will no longer follow a chronology as before, but will be presented in thematic blocks.
