      Keine Deiche – das freut die Besucher, die sich zur Mainspitze auf den rund 1,5 Kilometer weiten Weg von Gustavsburg aufgemacht haben. Ganz unmittelbar können sie ans Wasser heran, mit den Füßen an heißen Tagen im Zusammenfluss planschen.

      Ganz unmittelbar auch können sie aber an anderen Tagen erleben, wie das ungebändigte Wasser die Landschaft formt: Bei Hochwasser ist an der Mainspitze „Land unter und kein Zutritt möglich“. Und hinterher? Kann der Mensch zusehen, wie schnell sich die Natur wieder mit den Gegebenheiten arrangiert. Für gewöhnlich aber genießen die Besucher den Blick über „Vater Rhein“ nach Mainz mit der gewaltigen Domkuppel. Rund 370 Meter breit ist sein Bett vor dem Zufluss, danach weitet es sich gewaltig um 100 Meter.

      Kein Wunder: Der Main ist am Ende fast 150 Meter breit und beschickt den Hauptstrom im Mittel mit 225 Kubikmetern Wasser. Pro Sekunde! Wer am gestalteten Triangel auf den geschwungenen blauen Bänken sitzt, den „Main Waves“, kann seine Gedanken aber auch in ganz andere Richtungen treiben lassen. Zum Beispiel darüber nachdenken, weshalb Rhein und Main zu den ganz wenigen männlichen Flüssen gehören.

      Das „der“ ist nämlich recht selten. Der Grund, sagen jedenfalls Sprachforscher: Die Bezeichnungen sind uralt und haben schon vor den Kelten existiert. Aber auch sonst findet sich viel Ungewöhnliches, und beim Main sogar noch ein bisschen mehr. Als nur einer von zwei großen Flüssen in Europa fließt er von Ost nach West (der andere ist die Warthe). Zwei Quellen hat er: Der Weiße Main eilt herab von den Hängen des Fichtelgebirges, der Rote Main nimmt seinen Lauf an der Ostflanke der Fränkischen Alb. Die Länge ab dem Zusammenfluss beträgt 472 Kilometer.

      Schiffbar ist der Main erst nach weiteren 84 Kilometern, ab Bamberg. Seltsam dabei: Ziemlich genau dort nimmt er die Regnitz auf, die mit ihren Quellflüssen deutlich länger ist. Normalerweise gibt der kürzere Fluss beim Zusammenschluss den Namen ab … Aber wer wollte schon in Frankfurt an der Regnitz wohnen? Und müsste dann, genau genommen, nicht auch der Rhein eigentlich Main heißen?

      Was auf den ersten Blick putzig klingt, ist auf den zweiten gar nicht so verwegen. Denn der Rhein ist erdgeschichtlich viel jünger als der Main. Er floss vor rund zehn Millionen Jahren als munteres Flüsschen mit Quellgebiet am Kaiserstuhl nach Norden ab. In den Main! Erst durch gewaltige tektonische Verschiebungen danach entstand der heutige Flussverlauf des Rheins. Gemessen an fünf Milliarden Erdgeschichte ist also das, was Ausflügler heute als scheinbar ewiges Rauschen an der Mainspitze genießen, nur eine Momentaufnahme.
