A stone's throw from Brussels you will find the Park of Tervuren - also known as Warande. It is one of the Flemish gateways to the Sonian Forest. The monumental remains of a rich past give extra flair to this green oasis, where you can stroll among majestic oak and beech trees, past elegant French gardens, ponds and flower beds. The name of this so-called Gordaalvijver comes from an old hamlet that existed in Tervuren in the early Middle Ages: Goordaal (goor means marshy).

The hamlet was relatively small and located northeast of the then Warande, which at that time only reached as far as the nearby Gordaalmolen. In addition to the mill, the hamlet also included the Goordaalhof after the first known owner Jan Van Goordaal (1334).
