The Ryck (pronounced [ʀɪk]) is a 30.7 km long river. The name derives from the Polabian word Rjeka or Rěka for "river". The names "Reke" and "Hilda" (like the original name of the neighboring monastery Eldena) are also mentioned in documents from the 13th century [de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryck]. The broad Ryckniederung, along with other river valleys such as the Peenetal and the Zieseniederung, is one of the drainage channels from the last ice age (named after the Vistula river), which ended around 12,000 years ago. The lowland lies between the flat loam areas of the former ground moraine and the meltwater deposits of the hilly hinterland of the Pomeranian main ice margin in northern Western Pomerania. The catchment area of the Ryck covers approx. 240 km². It runs above the city limits of Greifswald, a few hundred meters behind this bridge as the Ryckgraben. Its headwaters are located between Bremerhagen and the eastern outskirts of Grimmen and are fed by several ditches, including the Schwedengraben. Up to the Horst pumping station, its level is partly below sea level. As a typical lowland river, it has a very low gradient and it can happen that easterly winds push the Boddenwasser from the mouth of the Danish Wiek into the river and it therefore seems to flow backwards. Common fish species are rudd, lead and pike. Due to its high nutrient content, long-lasting summer temperatures can also lead to a lack of oxygen and therefore fish kills. Efforts are being made to reduce nitrogen inputs from adjacent agricultural areas. The high phosphate load from the sewage could be counteracted with the installation of sewage treatment plants and systems in the catchment communities at the end of the 20th century. In the upper reaches, riparian vegetation must be cut regularly to counteract weed growth. Below the Steinbecker Bridge in Greifswald, the Ryck is a federal waterway and its salt content is slightly increased due to the exchange with the brackish Bodden water. It is a popular fishing water.
