The town church in the rather small Sternberg appears unusually large. Apart from its imposing appearance, it is also worth taking a look inside the church.

Here you can admire a beautiful fresco from 1549 depicting the Reformation. Or you can listen to the sounds of the Walcker organ, whose special construction is one of the last surviving organs of its kind in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Between Schwerin and Güstrow lies the typically Mecklenburg town of Sternberg, whose unusually large town church alone is worth a visit. It owes its size to Prince Heinrich II of Mecklenburg. After a city fire in 1309, he began to systematically develop the city and build the representative church. A year later he made Sternberg his main residence.

In the 7th and 8th centuries there was a Slavic hilltop castle on the site of today's Sternberg. Prince Pribislaw I of Parchim-Richenberg founded the town of Sternberg in 1248, which was systematically rebuilt by Prince Heinrich II after a town fire in 1309 and designated as his residence. The town church was begun in 1309 as a brick building and completed in 1322. A three-nave hall church of five bays was built. During restoration work in 1895, paintings from the 14th century were discovered and restored with major additions. The Sternberg town church is a three-nave, five-bay brick hall church. It belongs to the type of halls without choirs, because the nave and choir are structurally separate.

Special sights are a Walcker organ, which is one of the last surviving organs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and a large fresco depicting the introduction of the Reformation in 1549.

An impressive Gothic brick church (St. Mary and St. Nicholas) with beautiful painting of the pillars, a small Gothic fresco and (more recent) thematic windows.
This is the site of the Jewish pogrom of 1492, when 27 Jews (accused of desecrating the host) were killed and the other 247 Jews were expelled, their property confiscated and debts to them declared void. This story reached its height when the allegedly desecrated hosts and the table top were put on display, after which pilgrimages to Sternberg began and thousands of pilgrims came every year (and brought 400 guilders to the city treasury).
