        Hotteln is one of the oldest places in Lower Saxony. It was first mentioned in 835 as Hottenhem in the traditions of the monastery Corvey. A memorial stone on the Thieberg, the central place in the village, reminds of it.

        The Thieberg was a large reservoir of water, so in the whole area Hotteln was always considered a water-rich village. Already in 1850, a water pipe was built in the lower village, which was fed from the well on Thieberg. In the upper village there was a pumping community. In 1930, a typhus epidemic broke out in the lower village, the cause of which was to be found in the contaminated water of the aqueduct. There were a large number of illnesses and deaths. The well was then closed and east of the village was built in Rethling a new well. Thus, the upper village could be connected to the water supply. An economic boom began in the village after the German-French War and the emergence of the German nation. The farmers started growing sugar beet because the soil was well suited for this purpose
