    Uebigau has been a city since 1303. The market square, which is quite large for the small town, was built in the 15th century. A tour through the historic streets around the market with a view of the detail is definitely worthwhile.

      The more than 750-year-old farming town of Uebigau offers an original cityscape with its restored half-timbered houses, historic cobbled streets and the dominant urban market place. In the historic city center there are buildings from different eras: the core of the parish church of St. Nikolai probably dates from the 11th to 12th centuries and the free-standing vicarage was built around 1782 in half-timbering. The medieval town hall burned down in 1693 and it was only 150 years later that the only massive town house to date was converted into a town hall. The very large, rectangular market square, laid out in the late Middle Ages, indicates the importance of the city as a place of trade. The unique reading stone paving with rows of boulders gives the square its unmistakable character.

        The approximately 750-year-old historical urban structure of the former agricultural town has largely been preserved. The very large rectangular market square with its rare striped pavement, which was laid out in the late Middle Ages, indicates Uebigau's former importance as a trading location. The stripes once served as a marker for setting up market stalls. On the market there is a water fountain modeled on the Uebigau city coat of arms and built on the occasion of the 700th anniversary.

        The historic old town of Uebigau with its restored, listed half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and narrow alleys was accepted by the state of Brandenburg in 1995 into the working group “Cities with Historic Town Centers,” which aims to identify Brandenburg’s historic town centers “as important objects of cultural and historical identification of people with their homeland”.
