    The Tiefburg in the Handschuhsheim district used to be a stately home. The core of the medieval moated castle still contains the foundation walls, the vaults of the residential tower and the defensive walls. The old manor house has been restored.
    Today the Handschuhsheim district association, which is involved in monument preservation, resides here.

                  The Walled KnightEdit

                  In 1770, the then owner of the Tiefburg, Johann Ferdinand Joseph Freiherr von Helmstatt, discovered a walled-up skeleton in medieval armor in a cavity behind a wall. There are a few legends surrounding this “walled-up knight”. One of them says that the immured man is said to have had a relationship with a resident of Hirschhorn Castle and was immured alive as punishment for this.

                  The armor is said to have come as a gift to the Electoral Palatinate General von Rothenhausen and later came to the royal antiquities collection in Munich via Elector Carl Theodor. The armor is now missing. A replica donated by the district association has decorated the site since 1977.
