The Protestant "St. Peter's Church" in Rostock was dedicated to Saint Peter. Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on Lake Genesareth when he - together with his brother Andrew - was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men". According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two thousand year long line of popes - currently Francis - are his successors. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the Bible verse in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, Verse 19).
Peter is also known together with Paul as the "prince of the apostles"; their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.

The steeple of the Petri Church is definitely worth a visit. It is best to use the stairs up and down the elevator again. The 50ct for lighting the roof beams is unfortunately not worth it ... The view over Rostock with its seven churches is still worthwhile for everyone!

St. Petri was first mentioned in 1252, and the church took on its current form in the 14th and 15th centuries. St. Petri and the associated Old Market are considered the nucleus of today's Rostock.

After severe war damage, the church was returned to use in 1967. The redesigned south aisle received side rooms and the Gustav Adolf Hall, today the location of the Evangelical Student Community> and the Youth Church Rostock>.

The choir windows by Lothar Mannewitz (1963) are artistically noteworthy.

The 117-meter-high tower is a popular tourist destination, as an observation deck can be reached by elevator or the historic staircase.

Like the other churches, St. Peter's Church belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran inner-city parish of Rostock, part of the Rostock provostship in the Mecklenburg church district of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany. The Reformation in Rostock started from St. Peter's Church, when in 1523 Duke Henry V commissioned the local chaplain Joachim Slüter to preach the Protestant sermon.[1] In an air raid in 1942, the church and its interior burned down and lost its characteristic spire.

St. Peter's Church originally had five bells, two of which were clock bells. The largest tower and ringing bell with a diameter of 179 cm was cast by Otto Gerhard Meyer in Rostock in 1742. The smallest, 65 cm in diameter, dates back to the Middle Ages. Only one bell, the historic bronze bell from 1548 (≈1,250 kg, diameter ≈1,300 mm, strike tone e1), named “Peter Matze Bell” after its founder, survived the many wars. It served first as a watchman's bell and later as an hourly chime bell. During the church fire after the bombing in April 1942, the spire of St. Peter's Church burned out and the three existing bells fell down. The Peter Matze bell also fell, but fell onto the roof of the church building. As a result, she survived the crash unscathed. It was initially hung in St. Mary's Church until 2010. Master bell founder Peter Schilling and his wife Margarete Schilling made two bronze bells for St. Mary's Church (3456 kg, diameter 1.71 m, strike tone h0 and 1948 kg, diameter 1.4 m, strike tone d1). These bells hung on deeply cranked steel yokes, which resulted in significant loss of sound. This three-bell ring, technically renovated, is to be put back into operation as part of the bell project planned for St. Peter's Church in order to replace the makeshift cast iron bell (in the tones f1 - as1 - b1) in the bell carrier in front of the church. Before the bells can be lifted onto the tower of St. Peter's Church, two new belfries must first be financed and built. The Petrikirche Rostock support association has taken over this financing.

The north aisle of the church is the only room that was not destroyed in the bombing raids of World War II.
