The reservoir was built around 1928. The upper basin holds around 77,000 cubic meters of water, most of which is fed from a small tributary of the nearby source of the Wurm. The original purpose of the pond was to supply water to the cloth industry in Burtscheid. Today it is a local recreation area with a restaurant close by.

A visit to the Diepenbenden reservoir can be easily combined with a bit of art history. Alfred Rethel, the creator of the famous "Rethel frescoes" that adorn the large hall of the town hall, grew up here. His family lived in the Diepenbenden estate, which can still be found to the right of the road (east) marked "Diepenbenden", in the first half of the 19th century (more on Wikipedia).
Another interesting object is on the other side of the reservoir (to the west) on Thönnesrahter Weg, the Thönnesrath estate. On the facade of the manor house, building elements can be seen that are reminiscent of the famous Aachen master builder Johann Josef Couven.
Another beautiful manor building (Gut Grindel) is located on the Grindelweg, below the Stauweiher (to the south).
