The Wachwitzgrund is one of the romantic right side valleys of the Elbe and is formed by the Gönnsdorfer Bach, which flows into the Elbe near the center of the Wachwitz village.
In the lower part of the ground there are still numerous small half-timbered houses that are reminiscent of the past of the place. Mostly poor cottagers, winegrowers and day laborers of the manor lived here. A downpour caused severe damage on May 12, 1844, causing the small creek to swell and become a torrent of water. Numerous buildings were destroyed or severely damaged.
The older buildings include the half-timbered houses at Wachwitzgrund Nos. 2, 4, 6, 12, 14, 16 and 18. Towards the end of the 19th century, small shops and commercial establishments were set up in many houses, since the residents, after they had stopped growing wine, turned to others had to change employment opportunities.
The yellow house (picture 1 and 2) is called Talhäuschen. The painter and graphic artist Hans Jüchser lived and worked there from 1921 until the end of his life in 1977. He is one of the most important representatives of Dresden painting of the 20th century (memorial plaque on the house).
Picture 3 shows the half-timbered house at Wachwitzgrund 13 from 1623. The St. Andrew's crosses typical of these buildings can be seen on the upper floor and in the gable. A small covered oven has been preserved in front of the house.
In 1969 the smallest house in town, also called “Villa Bücke Dich” by the residents, was torn down because it had become too dilapidated. (dresdner-stadtteile.de)

The lower, asphalted part of the Wachwitzgrund is lined with many half-timbered houses worth seeing.
Always accompanied by the Wachwitzbach, you can venture further into more rustic realms.
On the left you can reach Rochwitz via the Eichendorffsteig, on the right a path leads directly to the foot of the television tower and a little later the poet-musician-painter path crosses the Grund up to Pappritz, straight ahead you can reach Gönnsdorf via stony paths in the wooded Grund .

The hiking trail now leads up the Wachwitzgrund 200 meters and then right to the former Wachbergschänke restaurant (ST-2), built in 1883. In the 1920s to 1940s, two Africans ran a field train, the so-called mule-drawn train, between Altwachwitz and Wachbergschänke Cameroon Railway. After the Second World War, the restaurant was used as a rest home and later as a place to stay for students at the Dresden University of Music. Next door in the mountain pavilion is the “knight's hall” and above it a viewing platform.
