Even from a distance, impressive religious buildings characterize the silhouette of the former bishopric town on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains.
The focal point of the historic center is the expansive cathedral square with its impressive ensemble of the magnificent Cathedral of St. Stephen and St. Sixtus and the Romanesque Church of Our Lady. The cathedral, built according to the French model, is considered one of the finest Gothic cathedrals in Germany. With over 600 valuables from several centuries, the cathedral treasury is one of the most exquisite church treasures in the world.
At the foot of the cathedral, the historic old town is waiting to be discovered. Winding alleys, cobblestones and leaded glass: Halberstadt enchants with the charm of its half-timbered architecture. The oldest houses date back to the 16th century. Attentive observers can still see traces of Halberstadt's formerly large Jewish community below the former bishop's palace, one of the largest in all of Central Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. Halberstadt surprises visitors with its diverse cultural landscape, numerous museums, and varied events calendar. In the Gleimhaus, one of Germany's oldest literary museums, the Age of Enlightenment is brought to life through an impressive collection of books, letters, and portraits of its namesake, Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim. The Municipal Museum offers deep insights into the cathedral city's eventful history, and for nature lovers, the Heineanum Ornithological Museum is sure to be a memorable experience. The Schraube Museum presents bourgeois living culture around 1900, and the Berend Lehmann Museum preserves the memory of the centuries-old tradition of Halberstadt's former Jewish community.

Drama, ballet, opera, and symphony concert lovers will find their money's worth at the Nordharzer Städtebundtheater (North Harz Association of Cities Theater). A musical highlight is probably the most unusual art project in organ history: since the turn of the millennium, the sounds of the John Cage organ art project "ORGAN²/ASLSP" have resonated in the Buchardi Church, which is scheduled to be played for a total of 639 years.
