It is the relic of a large US military base (OP-India), built in 1984.
On the Heldrastein there is an observation tower, the tower of unity. Border information is reminiscent of the former inner-German border. Wonderful views of the Hessian and Thuringian Werra valleys, in good weather all the way to the Harz Mountains, delight every cyclist here.
