Pottenstein Castle is one of the oldest castles in Franconian Switzerland and houses a castle museum. It rises on a rock above the town of Pottenstein in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth in Bavaria.

The castle Pottenstein was probably founded in the 11th century by Botho of Carinthia and was originally to secure the area between Obermain and Pegnitz owned by the Babenberg Margrave of Schweinfurt. It is now a privately owned and populated museum after almost 700 years of membership of the Bamberg bishopric. Even a holiday apartment is set up in the Belétage des Palas.

Wednesdays - Sundays, in addition to bank holidays on Mondays and Tuesdays
from 10:00 to 17:00, admission until 16:30

Winter break November to April (higher prices apply):
The visit for larger groups is by prior arrangement in the winter break and outside the regular opening hours possible (info phone 09243/7221 or 7331).
