A plaque above the Schlosstor, on which there is a bishop 's and Duchy - Saxon coat of arms, reports that the castle was built in 1252. The foundation stone was laid under the Merseburg Bishop Heinrich von Ammandorf to a Romanesque customs castle with moat. In the middle of the 14th century, Gebhard von Schraplau (bishop from 1324-1341) had the castle built into a castle. It stands on oak piles and served the diocese of Merseburg to secularization as accommodation for the bishops who passed by. In 1347 an episcopal chapel was first mentioned in the castle.
From 04. - 06.11.1632 the castle was used as the headquarters of Wallenstein. On the day of the battle, a part of the Lützner citizens was locked in the vaults, to prevent them from trying to extinguish the city fire.
