      The bridge in Heiligenstedten is a bascule bridge over the Stör. The structure dates back to 1967 and is the successor to the old wooden bascule bridge at the same location, for which bridge fees were paid in 1966 as the last bridge in Germany. This bridge fee was set by a bridge commune formed from the surrounding villages. The bridge fee has been documented since 1661, but it will probably have been levied before that. From 1840, the wooden bascule bridge made it possible not only for passers-by on land to collect a bridge toll but also for skippers. They had to pay the “elevator money” in a bell bag that was held out on a pole during the passage. This procedure was maintained until an accident in 1966, in which the bridge was badly damaged and was replaced one year later by the current building. After 51 years of operation, this bridge is also due to be renewed in 2019 due to deterioration. Its wooden predecessor is still adorned with the Heiligenstedten coat of arms and has served for 126 years. The bridge keeper's house is right next to the bridge, on the southern bank of the Stör. The building was acquired by the bridge community in 1844 and is still available to the bridge keepers today.
