The chapel was renovated in medieval style between 1927 and 1929 by the Franciscan architect Antonio Barluzzi. The three stained-glass windows depict the Flagellation, the Washing of Pilate's Hands, and the Triumph of Barabbas. The dome above the sanctuary depicts a crown of thorns interspersed with glass roses. Through these, subdued light falls into the church—even in the agony of death, the faithful have hope for light."
