Gundersheim was first mentioned in a document in 769 in connection with a donation of vineyards to the Lorsch monastery. The village is believed to have been founded around 500 C.E. by a Frankish king named Gundemar or Guntram, who settled here with his clan. Before that, the Romans had colonized our area for about 400 years. This is proven by some finds from the local area. Today the community has about 1600 inhabitants.

The remains of a (terrifyingly low) old defensive wall between the two churches in Gundersheim is still a contemporary witness of the 30 Years War (1618-1648). The Catholic Church, surrounded by a cemetery, served as a fortified church at that time. Behind the cemetery wall with its defense tower, the farmers stood ready to defend themselves.

Until 1959, the workers in the nearby limestone quarry "Rosengarten" - today a nature reserve - earned their daily bread as "stone breakers". The rocks were blown up using powder and then crushed by hand. The limestone was then burned in two ring kilns in the direction of the train station and the lime was transported away by freight wagons. The stone material was transported from the quarries to the kiln via rail tracks on which horse-drawn trolleys run.

The bronze sculpture "Steinbrecher" refers to the large number of citizens who earned their living or an "extra income" in earlier years through heavy physical work in the numerous limestone quarries in and around Gundersheim. The stone crusher with its pry and crowbar is the work of the Alzey sculptor Volker Schäfer.
