Kronobergs Slottsruin is the ruin of Kronoberg Castle, the medieval residence of the bishops of Växjö and namesake of the Kronobergs Län province. The Kronoberg castle ruin is a popular excursion destination and is picturesquely situated on an island near the shore in Lake Helgasjön, around 5 kilometers north of the provincial capital Växjö.

Kronobergs Slott dates back to around 1444, when Bishop Lars Mikaelsson built a fortified residence for the bishops of Växjö. During the Dacke uprising in 1542/43, Kronoberg Castle was the headquarters of a peasant army that fought against the troops of the Swedish King Gustav Vasa under the leadership of Nils Dacke, who was revered as a popular hero in Småland.

In the course of the following 200 years, Kronobergs Slott was repeatedly the subject of armed conflict as a border fortification to the then still Danish provinces of Skåne and Blekinge. During this time the fortress was burned down at least twice by Danish troops and each time it was rebuilt a little larger after the reconquests.

The current ruins of the rectangular castle with its four round corner towers are the remains of Kronoberg Castle after the last reconstruction in 1616. After the neighboring Danish provinces had finally become Swedish in 1658, the fortress lost its strategic use. It was abandoned, fell into ruin at the end of the 17th century and was used at times as a quarry for building houses in Växjö.

The castle island and the neighboring island of Stallholmen are connected to the mainland by a footbridge at the level of the popular tourist restaurant Ryttmästaregården. This is also the home port of the steam boat Thor, built in 1887, which regularly runs round trips over Helgasjön to the historic Åby lock in summer.
