The Eyneburg in Hergenrath near Kelmis is one of the most important historical buildings in East Belgium. Today she is quite dilapidated - Belgium is just broke. Even the once romantic castle café only consists of a sign under the windows.
The ascent from the Geul up the slope is still worthwhile, because the castle lies in a beautiful landscape.
However, one then comes out in the courtyard above and on the other side all exits are closed. You have to climb over part of the dilapidated wall to get out.

The Eyneburg, first mentioned in a document in 1260, was probably originally built as the seat of the family of the same name to protect the mine on the nearby Galmeiberg, which was important for the economy of the Middle Ages. The castle, located in a picturesque landscape on a wooded hill, consists of a mighty keep, a chapel and a spacious representation and living area, to which numerous farm buildings are attached. The castle is a closed complex, partly surrounded by protective masonry. Outside the inner castle grounds there is a park that is also surrounded by walls.

Hello, you can start a hike from the parking lot near Lidl. Then you will see the beautiful lake. Then cross the small river through the small narrow bridge and run up to the mountain. The route in the forest is marked. If you are already at the top and have walked out of the forest, but on the left is a huge gate and a castle ... this property is not accessible but it is nice to see. There you go down left onto the black street and then you come from above or to the side ... or from behind to Eynenburg Castle ...
You cannot visit the Eylenburg. That was only possible 8 or 10 years ago.
The beautiful castle is falling apart, unfortunately, no organization can protect it or wants to protect it ... and all of this is due to a political dispute! ... that is a very, very bad thing for society, .... for us !
And if you do this route the other way round, then the Eyneburg is almost at the end of your hike ... then you are past the lake again to the parking lot where you started!
