Idyllic natural paradise with many water birds and other wild animals (herons, pheasants, hares ...) and of course the biggest highlight - the meadows of checkerboard flowers.

      Checkerboard blossom in the Junkernfeld
Your flower is only a few centimeters in size. And yet it causes a stir wherever it appears. The checkerboard flower, which is severely threatened in Germany, usually shows up towards the end of April. In addition to a few natural occurrences along the Elbe, the Junkernfeld is the main distribution area with up to 1.3 million flowers per year.
      When is it worth visiting?
A visit to the Junkernfeld is worthwhile in every season. But if you are particularly interested in the flowering of the checkerboard flower, you should plan your visit in the last weeks of April.
      What is the Junkernfeld?
The Junkernfeld is a traditional grassland area of around 160 hectares, which is bordered by Seevedeich, Herrendeich and Elbdeich. It is almost entirely owned by the state of Lower Saxony and is managed with strict nature conservation requirements.
The Junkernfeld lies between Hörsten bei Maschen and Over on the Elbe in the nature reserve “Untere Seeveniederung”. This means that special rules of conduct apply so that this sensitive area with its animal and plant species is not unnecessarily disturbed.
Therefore, do not leave the marked paths, make sure you keep your dog on a leash and do not disturb the tranquility of nature with unnecessary noise.

The chessboard flower in the Lüneburg Heath - unparalleled flower magic
In April and May a very special and rare blossom magic awaits you in the north of the Lüneburg Heath. It is the heyday of the chess flower, also known as the checkerboard flower, which is worth protecting.

From the end of April to the beginning of May the chess flowers bloom in the approx. 500 hectare nature reserve "Untere Seeveniederung". The outstanding occurrences of the chess flower population are not only of great national importance, they are probably the largest occurrence in Central Europe.

The chess flower is endangered in Germany.
In 1993 she was selected as Flower of the Year.

The Junkernfeld in the "Unteren Seeveniederung" houses probably the largest occurrence of chessboard flowers in Germany on an area of 130 hectares. It is almost entirely owned by the State of Lower Saxony.

The chess flower bloom at the end of April / beginning of May attracts numerous nature lovers every year. Even outside the heyday, the "Untere Seeveniederung" nature reserve is a popular destination for nature lovers, especially bird lovers.
In spring and autumn you can observe rare bird species from an observation tower without being disturbed.

Every year between April and May you can experience Germany's most important chess flower population from a jetty. On site, boards provide information about the special features of nature in the Lower Seeveniederung.
