      What drives the Hamburg Botanical Society to get involved in looking after the eastern slopes of the Delvenau Valley in the Duchy of Lauenburg district? The reason lies in the uniqueness of these warm, species-rich dry locations, which prompted the Botanical Society and its then first chairman Franz Elmendorff to take excursions here by train, bus and bicycle 86 years ago. On May 13, 1923, he noted: “Bushy, grassy, heathery slopes with heather and spring sedge (Carex ericetorum and C. caryophyllea), pasqueflower (Pulsatilla pratensis) along the entire slope from the nearby Bergholz to beyond Grambek, as well as cat's paw (Antennaria dioica).”
