The flood bridges used parallel-belted truss beams with a postless truss truss and overhead roadway. Caissons were used for the foundation of the stream piers. The bridge had two tracks from the start.
A pair of massive, squat defense towers flanked each of the two bridge ends. In addition, a pair of narrow, high towers covered with baroque hoods marked the transitions from the flood bridges to the main girders.
