The 730 meters of the tunnel can be quite cool and long. Part of the way is gravel

Be sure to take a (good) flashlight with you! The tunnel is over 700m long and makes a bend - after about 100m you can't even see the entrance and it's pitch black! If you've watched too many horror films, you have to show your nerves here! ;-) In addition to the dark, it is very cool in the tunnel and it drips from the ceiling.
Coming from the west portal, the first half of the path is paved - then there is a wall with a door (another obstacle for people with weak nerves!) - and the second half is a gravel path.
The tunnel is closed from October to April due to the bats. We were there in July - but didn't see any!

For some time there was a plan to convert the tunnel as a cycle path from Kreuzwerheim to Trennfeld. An opening of the tunnel to hikers and tourists was also discussed between the municipality and nature conservation associations, but this was rejected because the building, as an important hibernation site for pug bats, is not accessible from October to May.

In part of the tunnel, the ground is asphalted and there is also a walled-off area, where Mercedes-Benz had a test facility:
From October to May it is actually closed due to the bats.

Crossing the tunnel armed with a flashlight offers a bit of adrenaline as well as a bit of cooling.

Exciting highlight with a thrill. Complete passage possible, sometimes only gravel. Good flashlight recommended!

A real highlight to walk through the tunnel. Don't forget your flashlight. A real cooling off in hot summer temperatures. Unfortunately Batman had already flown out. 😁🦇

Nice adventure, also for kids! A good flashlight and a jacket are recommended. This entrance looks quaint.

The tunnel is open from the beginning of April to the end of September.
If you have a strong light on your cell phone, you should be fine.
Otherwise, I recommend carrying a flashlight or headlamp.
It drips heavily from the ceiling in places. If you don't mind, fine, otherwise wear appropriate clothing.

                            Very nice tunnel.
Attention: except for the first and last 100m, the tunnel stock is dark!
                            Don't forget the flashlight.

Very beautiful disused railway tunnel. You can walk through it. In the middle there is a wall with a door. In one half of the tunnel the floor is concrete, in the other half the floor is gravel.
You must go through it with a flashlight/headlamp. It is extremely cold in the tunnel and you often cannot see any light at the end of the tunnel. The tunnel is black inside, so the light from the flashlight does not reach very far.
We were in the tunnel in the summer when the temperature was high. It was very cool in the tunnel, almost cold. Due to the large temperature difference between the tunnel and the outside, it was foggy in the tunnel.

Don't forget your flashlight and jacket!
Sure-footedness is an advantage, as walking in the dark and on gravel is not easy.
For me it was an absolute adventurous highlight with an adrenaline rush!

The Lohr–Wertheim railway, also known as the East Spessart Railway, was a branch line in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. It ran largely along the Main River from Lohr am Main to Wertheim. In Wertheim, it connected to the railway lines to Miltenberg and Lauda.

Operation of the 37.1-kilometer-long line began on October 1, 1881, by the Royal Bavarian State Railways; 1.6 kilometers of the line lay within Baden territory. However, as early as 1885, the Bavarian Railway Administration described the line as one of the least frequently used lines in its network, a situation that remained largely unchanged in the decades that followed.

Passenger service between Lohr Stadtbahnhof and Wertheim was discontinued on May 30, 1976, followed by the Lohr Bahnhof–Lohr Stadt section on May 22, 1977. Freight traffic still operates there today, primarily to supply the local glassworks (as of 2020). Freight traffic between Lengfurt-Trennfeld and Wertheim was discontinued on May 26, 1979, and between Lohr Stadt and Lengfurt-Trennfeld on September 29, 1991. The line was dismantled in 1980/81 and 1993, respectively.

The three tunnels of the railway line – the Bettingberg Tunnel, the Kaffelstein Tunnel, and the Schlossberg Tunnel in Wertheim – were closed in 1980/81. After the line was closed, the Bettingberg Tunnel was used by Daimler-Benz AG for a time to test its track-guided bus.

👻 Not for the faint of heart...

The Bettingberg Tunnel looks like a horror movie set in the dark – cold, quiet, and eerie. The final section leads through an old, rusty door, which alone gives you goosebumps.

Suddenly, we saw two bright lights appear in the distance. For a moment, we thought a vehicle with its high beams on was coming straight towards us 👀 – right in the middle of the abandoned tunnel! Our hearts were in our throats 😂. Only when the lights came closer did we realize: They were cyclists. 😂😂

Tip for hikers: The Bettingberg Tunnel is an exciting and unexpected place in the heart of the Spessart region. The massive stone facade of the east portal is particularly impressive. Be sure to bring a flashlight if you want to walk through the tunnel – it's quite dark inside!
