Heidelsheim was first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex in 770 under the name "Heidolfesheim". About 310 of the approximately 1,200 residents were still alive at the end of the war.
On August 12, 1689, the city was almost completely destroyed by French troops, the population fell to around 50. In 1803, after the Electoral Palatinate was dissolved, Heidelsheim fell to Baden.
In 1935, Heidelsheim's city rights were revoked. In 1952 the state government of Württemberg-Baden awarded Heidelsheim the city title again. In the course of district and municipal reform, Heidelsheim became a district of Bruchsal on October 1, 1974, despite stubborn resistance from the population to the incorporation.
