The church is one of the barn roof churches in the Troodos Mountains. It is located about five kilometers outside the village of Kakopetria on a stream and is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra. Construction began in the early 11th century and was later expanded and provided with the barn roof. The frescoes date from six centuries.

The fine features of a larger-than-life Nicholas, the church patron, from the 12th century betray an artist experienced in icon and fresco painting. Beside his shoulders, Jesus painted him a Bible and Mary gave him an omophorion. At the bottom left is a monk with a petition above him. A holy Theodore and a holy Georg from the 14th century, also larger than life, wear colorful uniforms. In a "Birth of Jesus" from the 14th century, the mother is shown as a galactotrophousa; she hands the child's left breast. Goats climb in the mountains with sprinkles of white in their fur. A young man on the left is playing the flute.
