The old town hall is a half-timbered house in Hattingen. Since about 1420 the building was a market hall for the sale of meat, built from Ruhr sandstone. In 1576 the building was raised by two floors in half-timbered construction and used as a town hall.

During a renovation at the end of the 18th century, the building received large windows, the half-timbering was plastered, the roof with the pointed gables was replaced by a hipped roof and the hall was converted into a passage with prison cells. The passage connects the Untermarkt with the church square.
