The town hall was inaugurated on October 2nd, 1900. The industrial city of Neumünster experienced a great economic boom at the end of the 19th century. Now this new building by architect Magnus Schlichting was to crown the success. He deliberately chose the neo-Gothic style as the architectural style. The monastery mosaics and the stained glass windows pierced by light were intended to take away the building's serious character.

The town hall's peripheral location at the end of the Großflecken caused town planners a lot of headaches during the last century when it came to renovations and extensions, because after just two years there was no longer enough space in this building for the town's offices. After just a few years, additions and renovations were made in and around the town hall.

In 1928, the town hall at Brachenfelder Strasse 1 - 3 was built according to plans by town architect Carl Lembke. Architect Fritz Hain sen. added the residents' registration office to the town hall in the 1930s.
In 1983, the old town hall was declared a listed building and in 1984 the new town hall administration building, designed by the architects Dissing + Weitling from Copenhagen, was inaugurated.

In 1900, a cozy Ratskeller was built with the old town hall. Big names like Kempinski were tenants there. But the restaurateurs changed frequently because the Ratskeller was out of the way and the competition around the Großflecken lured in with cheaper offers.
